Metacognition and the Transition to College is a course offered to students in their first semester as an alternative to the regular THRIVE sessions. Specifically geared toward first-generation and/or low-income students, the purpose is to allow for real self-reflection and to inspire growth and development in all areas of the self – intellectual, personal, emotional, social, physical, ethical, spiritual, and vocational.

Metacognition is the process by which learners use knowledge of the task at hand, knowledge of learning strategies, and knowledge of yourself to plan your learning, monitor your progress towards a learning goal, and then evaluate the outcome.

This course integrates theoretical and conceptual issues related to learning and motivation from cognitive, social, and educational psychology. Central components of the course will be your application of course constructs to your learning and reflecting on your learning experiences to build and fine-tune your metacognitive knowledge and self-regulation skills.

Our class will also overlap with some of the THRIVE timeline and curriculum.
