This course examines the art and printed culture produced in Europe from the fourteenth century through the sixteenth century. This period saw social, political, and religious turmoil but also tremendous artistic and cultural innovations. Foremost among these was the emergence of printmaking around 1400, when images went from unique and inaccessible to duplicate and ubiquitous. We will examine a wide range of reproduced and reproducible imagery, including prints, books, and the emergence of print reproductions of paintings. We will look at some of the key artists of the period through the lens of print media, including artists like Albrecht Dürer. In our age of infinitely multiplicable images, this course examines the original image revolution with an aim to understanding how images move through and reshape society.

In this seminar, we will explore film, media, and art that speak to the present moment, including prescient voices from the past, documents of the here and now of life in 2020, and creative works that imagine and facilitate new futures. Texts and media that address time and social change will be foregrounded. We will look at recent art, film, media, and writings that address the Black Lives Matter movement, contemporary iconoclasm, desktop aesthetics, art in the time of pandemic, and other topics to be determined. Students will be invited to suggest examples from their own recent viewing and reading for group discussion. The syllabus will remain flexible so as to include and address the changing circumstances unfolding around us.

Fulfills 300-level course requirement for History of Art majors and minors and Film Studies minors, and Theory requirement for Film Studies minors. Priority enrollment to graduate students in the History of Art, senior History of Art majors and minors, and senior Film Studies minors, followed by juniors. Prerequisite: a 100- or 200-level course in the History of Art.

Tuesdays 10a-11:30a, synchronous, 100% remote, Zoom, discussion-based seminar. Day and time subject to change pending enrollment and time zones: students will be polled at the start of the semester and we will attempt to accommodate all who wish to enroll.

This is a workshop designed to support graduate students in the History of Art in independent research and writing projects at any stage. These include seminar papers and MA theses, preparing bibliographies and studying for preliminary exams, researching and writing a dissertation prospectus, or writing drafts of dissertation chapters. The primary purpose of this seminar and its time slot are to help you pursue your academic work in an efficient, realistic, and mindful fashion. We will also use the seminar for professional development: discussion of teaching, abstracts and talks, fellowship applications, publishing, the job market, and service and leadership. This seminar is the sole regularly offered formal setting for you to receive this training. Finally, the seminar will provide a forum for practice talks and mock interviews. May be taken more than once for credit; mandatory for those beyond coursework except by permission of primary advisor.
