Law regulates public behavior between individuals and their community and private behavior between individuals. In this course we will examine this regulation as it pertains to the form and the function of the built environment. On the public side we will discuss zoning and land use, housing policy, local government law and public finance. On the private side we will consider legal issues affecting how property is developed. The purpose of this class is to understand how legal and policy considerations shape the urban form. We will focus on the laws/government policies in the United States.
