The core objective of this course is the development of speaking and listening skills of students at the Advanced Level of Arabic, moving beyond vocabulary and structure acquisition to interacting in Arabic on multiple professional and social levels. We will focus on the pragmatics of the language—understanding how context, social hierarchy, and intent change the way we speak—and the cultural nuances embedded within contemporary topics. This will be achieved through the introduction of multimedia materials in Modern Standard Arabic. The materials selected will aim to help the students acquire socio-cultural competence while advancing their aural and oral communication skills. Students will work individually, in pairs, and in groups to prepare skits and reports for oral presentations. This class is conducted entirely in Arabic.

No language can be studied in a vacuum. It has to be tied to the culture that utilizes it. Arabic is spoken in over twenty African and Asian countries. Even though the written language is standardized, mainly because of the Qur’ân, the spoken dialects vary from one country to another and even from one region to another within the same country. Therefore, the main aim is to reach the advanced level in MSA; later, you can select other dialects to suit your needs, especially as you travel overseas.
PREREQUISITES:
Three Semesters of Intensive Arabic or their equivalent. New students who are native or heritage speakers of Arabic or have studied Arabic prior to enrolling at the Bi-Co will consult with Ustadza Manar Darwish to assess if this course is at a suitable level for them.
