We know the predictions—the glaciers, the tides, the endless fire, species loss at the hands of us and including us. Some of us have already begun living through it. How do we live amid these changes? How do we build a different world, slowly and intentionally, with the tools we have? In ENVS 203 we aim to realize our collective power and chart our path into this uncertain present and future. This course takes us into the history of environmental degradation, the question of complex systems change, and asks us to design our internal compasses for orienting and navigating socio-biospheric upheavals and changing tides.

ENVS 203 is a core requirement for the Environmental Studies major at Bryn Mawr and Haverford. It is also the onramp for a humanities path within our major. Here, you will learn about core environmental humanities thinking, practice, and possibility. As a writing course, this class is steeped in stories of environmental loss, earth love, and the kaleidoscopic imaginings of our future. We look back, forward, and inward to arrive at more just articulations of the world to come.
