This is a workshop designed to support graduate students in the History of Art in independent research and writing projects at any stage. These include seminar papers and MA theses, preparing bibliographies and studying for preliminary exams, researching and writing a dissertation prospectus, or writing drafts of dissertation chapters. The primary purpose of this seminar and its time slot are to help you pursue your academic work in an efficient, realistic, and mindful fashion. We will also use the seminar for professional development workshops, topics to be determined by student interest: teaching and pedagogy, conference talk and panel proposals, conference etiquette and how-tos, fellowship and grant application writing, publishing, image permissions, predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, the job market, and service and leadership. This seminar is the sole regularly offered formal setting for you to receive this training. Finally, the seminar will provide a forum for practice talks, writing accountability, and peer editing and feedback on research projects. May be taken more than once for credit; mandatory for those beyond coursework who are currently working on an MA thesis, dissertation prospectus, or dissertation writing, except by permission of primary advisor. If you are unsure about whether you should register, please contact your primary advisor and/or the current Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Lisa Saltzman.
