Section outline

    • Welcome to the first object study day! We will see many sixteenth-century prints (some of them 19th-century reprints) as well as a few plaster copies of sixteenth-century ivory sculptures. Object information is attached below.
       
      All works center on the theme of the nude. Think again about how we described diverse kinds of nudes (medium, poses, composition, narrative strategy, clothed and unclothed, forms, emotions, values, and more) together in our class on Pollaiuolo, and read an essay assigned for 9/10, a very brief outline of the Renaissance nude by Thomas Martin, before coming to the Special Collections visit.
       
      The Special Collections visit on 9/10 will last 40 minutes for each group (*please note not all special collections visits have same durations. I will always announce a few days ahead before individual visits)
       
      Location: Meet up at the Special Collections study room on the Canaday Library 2nd floor.

      * The objects you see on this day of 9/10 will be the subject matter for your assignment 1 (due 9/24). 
      * I’ll give out the assignment guideline at the beginning of the class.
      * At the end of the class, I'll ask you to choose one work for your assignment and write down your name on the list of objects before you leave (of course, several people may choose one object). This is to help the curator prioritize the objects of your choice when arranging them in drawers for you to come back and study for your assignment.
       
      Others
      - You cannot use pens in the study room; pencils are fine.
      - Of course, even if it is a pencil, please don't point it to the artworks.
      - Washing hands before studying objects is much appreciated. Thank you!

As the assignment prompt (available under 9/24) indicates, Assignment 1, due 9/24, should include the author (if known), title, and date of the object of your choice in the essay text.

    • Object Locations in Drawers File PDF

      Our curator stored the objects in drawers to be held there until 9/24 so that you can come back to study them while writing your assignment.

      The drawers are located near the Special Collections offices on the 2nd floor of Canaday Library. The objects are accessible during the entire opening hours of the Canaday Library: https://www.brynmawr.edu/inside/offices-services/library-information-technology-services#hours
