In week 2, we will read works from Japonica Brown-Saracino, the American sociologist and ethnographer; Neil Smith, the Scottish, Marxist geographer; and Sharon Zukin, the American sociologist. Each scholar has been critical to our understanding of gentrification. Writing primarily in response to early forms of gentrification during the 1970s and 1980s and focusing on the American city, Smith and Zukin offer a foundation, while Brown-Saracino while show us how gentrification has evolved as a framework and idea beyond what Glass, Smith, and Zukin were writing in response to.
