Section: Week 3: What is gentrification? Definitions and key concepts | Gentrification (CITY.B207.001.F26)

Section outline

In week 3, we will read works from a variety of scholars writing on gentrification’s effects, namely “super-gentrification” via Loretta Lees, an English geographer and sociologist; displacement, via Lance Freeman, an American city planner and sociologist, and culture via, geographer Roman Adrian Cybriwsky and historian-planner, Paul Levy. Then, on Thursday we will consider the varying trajectories of 4 Philadelphia neighborhoods from the postwar period to the 1980s in a piece by RA Beauregard, an American city planner, followed by a reading of a magazine article, written by journalist, Jared Bray, on Northern Liberties. These readings are in preparation for our first site visit, which will be to Northern Liberties.
