Introduction
Tues 9/1: Introduction (no reading assigned in advance of class)
Thur 9/3 (read before class):
1) Bryn Mawr College's Honor Code
2) Edgar Allan Poe, “The Man of the Crowd” (1840)—7 pages
Some questions you might consider while reading Poe's short story:
- What is distinctive/interesting about the narrator's experiences of/relationship to the city?
- What to make of the focus on reading the crowd and the stranger?
- Who is "the man of the crowd"—the narrator or the stranger? Or both? What to make of their uneasy connection?
- How to think about the story's attention to visuality and visual detection?
