I was intrigued at the part in Chapter 7 when Bromfield writes about having toy guns. My parents were those parents who didn't let us play with them because to them, guns were only a symbol of violence or war. I thought it was interesting that he calls into question the power of toys and how individual toys are not at all the root of a child's psychopathology. I appreciated that he noted it's important for children to have a safe way to express their aggression in a therapeutic setting and that nerf blasters, which do not resemble real guns, are a way to do this. Ignoring something rarely works with helping a child (or anyone) work through something so I thought this was a useful point that challenged conventional ideas of "good parenting." I'm left wondering how to maintain boundaries and limits that are useful when it comes to toy guns, especially in neighborhoods where gun violence is very prevalent.
