I really liked the strengths perspective on self-harm and cutting behaviors. I haven't really seen much literature outlining a strengths-based treatment for cutting, and have often seen children who perform self-harming behaviors go through a very similar process towards institutionalization as Carol. I liked the example of how to impact change in a child's life while they are in a very abusive situation, like Carol, but I was wondering - should a child not feel comfortable confronting their parent like Carol did, what would a clinician do in that situation? What are alternative coping mechanisms a clinician could suggest that might help the child with self-harming behaviors but also keep them safe from their abusive parent?
