I appreciated todays discussion as this topic hits close to home. As a young woman of color, I have had to reevaluate my relationship with 12 step programs during my recovery journey, as I over time I identify more and more racism, sexism, and trauma-ignorant issues within the program. It felt validating to hear other people's experience with racism etc in "The Rooms" and how my blackness, especially in terms of the pandemic and George Floyd, had affected my not only emotional sobriety, but others as well.
In regards to the podcast, I find it interesting that there was such pushback in regards to having a BIPOC meeting when there are other "mens meetings" and "womens meetings" and "LGBTQ" meetings that are openly listed on meeting lists. Other intersectional identities are readily listed and welcomed, but not for people of color. 12 step programs are beneficial, but still have a lot of work to do to root out their issues of white supremacy.
