Most of the issues that have complicated creating a definitive history of jazz stem from the repression of its roots. As both the commentators for Pillow Voices and Takiyah Nur Amin’s “The African Origins of an American Art Form” point out, only recently are scholars giving the acknowledgment that early jazz originated from the dances of African slaves in America. The reason for this delay in acknowledgment likely stems from both blunt racism and the viewing slavery in America as too taboo to talk about. Furthermore, the history of jazz has been muddled considering how many different styles of dance/music stem from it. As Pillow Talk explains specifically how rock and roll soon came to overtake jazz, and as rock became more mainstream to white audiences, its jazz roots were soon repressed and forgotten for quite some time thereafter. Although modern scholars are able to piece together more of a cohesive timeline, the repressed importance of jazz in both its roots and influence continue to create obstacles.
