Dear students,

The PA Hallow Grounds project is hosting a wonderful online event this Saturday, October 15th, 10 AM-3PM Eastern, highlighting the latest in African-American Cemetery preservation and restoration efforts in PA! The keynote speaker is Dr. Antoinette Jackson, who is a Professor of Anthropology at the U. of South Florida and the founder of the Black Cemetery Network. For the complete schedule and free registration, click here.

Secondly, if you are interested in (bio)archaeology, the Pennsylvania Archaeological Council is organizing a day of service on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at the Midland Cemetery, a historic African American cemetery in Steelton, PAVolunteers will work as part of a team with professional archaeologists and members of the Friends of Midland to help document (using GIS mapping and photography) and preserve this cemetery, which has been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No prior training necessary!

I am planning to go to Stelton on the 30th, so if you're interested in learning more about this great opportunity for networking and getting some experience with archaeological fieldwork, please email me! I can give you more details about the schedule, and we can figure out the logistics if you'd like to participate. I will also need to let the organizers know how many people to expect. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have!

Best,

Prof. Seselj
