Katarina met with JH on 5/13/24. Katarina is interested in more contemporary (220th & 21st cent) utopian communities. She's not interested in religious or fringe examples, but in more mainstream examples. She's interested in the physical spaces of these communities and how the physical form relates to social interactions and goals. She's thinking of doing a case study or comparison case study with secondary and/or archival materials (not interviewing people). She's interested in Germany, the US, and the UK as possible sites. She will be in Germany this summer so will try to find German examples. She started reading some Garden Cities material but felt a little lot in the history. We talked about how many of the non-religious, non-fringe examples in the US are pretty modest, so they're hard to find information on (cooperative apartments, people joining with friends to have co-housing in a big old house or build a small cottage community, etc.). She's interested in larger examples that have more urban design implications. Jennifer told her to check the bibliography in Helen Harman's thesis from 2019 (which was on social co-op apartment buildings) and to look at Dolores Hayden's writing. Katarina is also planning to speak with Min.
