The chapter in Boyd-Webb, Individual Play Therapy with Children, focuses on the ways that play with children can be a method of addressing potential concerns or behaviors. The importance of this the author says is meeting the child where they are. As is disclosed in Kendall, children don't choose treatment the adults in their lives do so with that in mind you must build a therapeutic alliance with the child.

While I agreed with most of the author's description of the work that needs to be done I did have some concerns about the way she described her work with Linda. At one point she says she labeled the work that she was doing as "distasteful" in order for her to be more hesitant to do it. In addition to this, she described her behavior as one that is only appropriate for younger kids to Linda. I felt that this was creating a sense of shame that Linda should have around her behavior. My question is, is it okay to provide children with some amount of shame or comparison to appropriate developmental milestones at this age?
