This was an incredibly compelling film. The quote, “What body you’re in has everything to do with your perspective of the world”, really struck me. It made me think of how myself and society at large, take advantage of the fact that the world is designed to support and cater to the existence of able-bodied or typical people. Society disregards the significance of other’s differing experience and orientation to the world. This film invites viewers to enter a world that is oftentimes overlooked and forgotten. It was a chance to encourage practicing empathy and a challenge to reconsider how we view diversity in contemporary society.
I was recently interviewing for an internship position, and the interviewer used the word neuro-expansive opposed to neurodivergent, and I appreciate this conceptualization from a personal and professional perspective. No neuro-expensive person is the same, and this is a tremendous strength. As clinicians, this film offered perspective in terms of how to provide care and support for atypical individuals and their families.
