The early modern dancers like Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn and Lester Horton became famous because of their desire of experimenting with their art and bringing something exotic to the audience. People did find their performances unique without knowing their influences which inspired their performances.
According to Srinivasan, St. Denis erased out the early Indian dancers who sparked the creativity in her work. Further, Srinivasan talks about white woman saying that, "While their work is recorded in multiple historical archives, laboring Indian female bodies that also contributed to American culture have disappeared."( Srinivasan 55). Srinivasan addresses the early Indian dancers as laborers which really hit hard indicating to the fact that the early Indian dancers did receive the credit they deserved.
