As societies have modernized and nations began to form, I believe that political aspects of life became the center of surveillance as a practice. However, as technology has advanced, it has undoubtedly taken the number-one contributing spot in this field. While Lyon’s paper was published in 2007 and is not fully up to date on the present-day mass use of the internet, he does touch on the existence of bloggers and their willingness to be freely surveilled online. As the internet has expanded and become an inevitable part of everyone's lives since then, I think it has become the most important topic to discuss in surveillance studies, regarding how ethical it is to share personal information and how limited internet privacy is.

I enjoyed Lyon’s paper and his point on bloggers. I think it was very interesting that he mentioned it is socially unacceptable to “hack” into people’s personal electronics to gain information, but as long as they post it themselves, it is completely okay for bloggers to offer very private details of their lives. I would be interested to see his take on this now in relation to social media influencers, because I think it is very relevant.
