I personally think that the fieldwork component of Ed classes is an absolutely indispensable part of the curriculum, since we– in my opinion and evidenced by best learning techniques– should always be connecting what we are learning to practical and relevant real-world experiences. That being said, I haven’t actually taken a Bi-Co Ed class before, and so haven’t engaged in a fieldwork placement, so I acknowledge that I don’t actually know what happens. In particular, I am a bit anxious about what the exact expectations and requirements are for the duration of the two hours each week. I am someone who really needs clear and explicitly communicated instructions, and I don’t do well with ambiguity or attempting to infer or interpret what I am supposed to do or “get” intuitively. Aside from the fact that I don’t actually know where my placements are (I’m in a few Ed classes) so I can’t yet imagine or research for that specific location or age group, etc., I think that the language that has thus far been communicated makes me confused and concerned about not having clear expectations. For instance, reading the section of the syllabus that discusses placements, it states that, “The purpose of the educational internship is to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions for relationship, facilitation, and change… as well as a chance to offer your time and skills to address felt needs in the field”. What exact skills are we supposed to be developing? How does one develop a disposition? Are we supposed to be changing something? What is a “felt need” and how does one “feel” that? Personally, aside from the fact that as an OUTSIDER in these communities, I am aware of my own positionality and don’t want to overstep or insert myself into “changing” something I have no right to, the wording makes me hesitant since it is so ambiguous. Furthermore, the Goal-setting sheet lists strong engagement as, “During visits, was engaged and curious–seeking out connections with stakeholders and supporting teaching and learning”. How exactly will I be “supporting” teaching and learning? Should I be helping students with understanding the lesson or filling out worksheets? Again, I’m not sure what role I will have or what would qualify me for that. Additionally, I’m not sure how one quantifies concepts like “was curious” or “engaged” since this can look like different things for different people. Overall, I think I’m just struggling with specifics and details and my hope is that much of this is dependent on the location and will be communicated when site-specific matches are made, and all will come clear.
