1) A quote that stood out to me in this reading was on page 381, and it said, "Let me draw your attention to all sorts of diverting things which are being revealed before our eyes". This quote stood out to me because it made me think about how everybody notices different things about something and, in this case, the cousin was trying to show the main character what they saw and, by doing so, opened their eyes and revealed more information. I also liked the idea that information was being revealed the longer they took the time to observe; the idea that information is always there; it just takes some time to dissect it.
2) I liked this text and how it was formatted as a story, but the message Hoffmann was giving was clear and really shone through. I found it interesting how they mentioned physiognomy, but I found that their observations were more based on body language and attitude rather than facial features. This was more reminiscent of how people often operate today and make broad assumptions about people based on one interaction.
