Woah, this piece really resonated with me. Your last sentence summed up what I felt when I quit swimming, which was a sport that I had loved for such a long period of my life. I always think about what would have happened to me if I had stayed or even quit earlier. There is a grief for the person you were and the person you could have become. Even after a year I am still plagued with "what ifs?" and almost a sense of jealousy about seeing how the team is doing now and I all the things I missed out on. Also, thinking about how everything keeps going on after you leave is another aspect that I related to.
