Between Sept 1 and Sept 14, keep a log of language-related phenomena that you observe in the media and/or in your everyday interactions (in person or online). This may include, among many other things:

  • examples of how particular words or expressions are used
  • how tone of voice is used 
  • how formality and informality are produced through language
  • switching between different languages or ways of speaking
  • turn-taking and interruptions
  • etc.

For each observation, try to be as detailed as you can about what was said; who was involved (no names!); where and when the interaction took place; and make a few notes on why you think it's interesting.

For Sept 15, choose 2 of your observations and write a paragraph about each one. Be prepared to discuss in class on Sept 15. 

Submit on Moodle Sept 15: your log of observations and the two paragraphs.
