A survey of topics related to drug discovery including lead discovery, target interactions, structural optimization, drug metabolism and drug synthesis. The course will engage in an advanced treatment of these topics with particular attention to an understanding of drug design and development on the molecular level. Case studies will be used to illustrate the application of these principles.

You should have familiarity with these topics and therefore I will assume that I don't need to elaborate on these subjects when we encounter them.
I suspect most of you've had very little coverage of heteroaromatics, which are a common component of many small molecule drugs, so I will likely provide some background early in the course.

This may or may not be useful for your studies of the medicinal chemistry literature. A lot of it deals with drug metabolism issues, which are extremely important, and will be discussed in the first few weeks of lectures.
