This assignment asks you to reflect on the experiences, ideas, people, and communities that have shaped you as a learner and are influencing the educator you are becoming. You will consider your educational experiences, preparation in your subject area, education coursework, and other relevant experiences in order to begin articulating your developing philosophy of education.

The goal is not to provide a complete history of your education or to arrive at a finished philosophy of teaching. Instead, select experiences that have been meaningful to you and examine how they have shaped what you currently believe about students, knowledge, teaching, learning, and the purpose of education.

Your response should be guided by the larger question:

How have your experiences and preparation shaped what you currently believe about education, teaching, and learning?

This assignment serves as the foundation for Section I of your Reflective Teaching Portfolio. You will return to these ideas throughout the semester as you learn from course readings, students, your Subject Area Specialist, field experiences, classmates, and your own developing practice. The portfolio similarly asks you to connect your preparation and educational experiences to your emerging philosophy of education.

Minimum Length: 1,200 words
Points: 100
