My name is Margot (she/her) and I am a first year at Bryn Mawr. I’m from Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is a small city in the Willamette Valley. It's a two hour drive from Portland, from the cold, often grey, but beautiful Pacific coast, and from lush forested mountains. Eugene is also home to the University of Oregon, where I’ve been immersed since I was a baby. The pairing of university-affiliated migrants to the city and its location in the Pacific Northwest make Eugene a largely liberal, very hippie city. As a kid, I went to hippie nature camps and toured salmon hatcheries in the rain and mud. Eugene has an easy-going collective personality and prides unconventionality and underplays the importance of conventional success. (This is both a blessing and a curse.) I do love my hometown; I have a tattoo of a chinook salmon to commemorate my home region. I love outdoor sports like hiking and kayaking as well as team sports like basketball and volleyball. I have two younger sisters, ages 17 and 8. I play classical violin and fiddle. I love watching movies, and also reading about their histories.
How long have you been playing violin? Also, would love to see your tattoo!
I've been playing classical violin for 9 years and fiddle for about 2. I'd love to show you my tattoo -- maybe we can get together sometime!
Hi Margot,
I've never been to Oregon and I really want to go to experience the vibe you've described as well as the unique climate (it's cold and snowy in Maine). In my hometown there is definitely some of that liberal, hippie, unconventional culture you talked about but I don't think it's as extreme. What is a salmon hatchery like?!

It seems like there's some subtle connection between Maine and Oregon, both being in the northern coastal corners of the U.S. and both having cities called Portland. When I went to the salmon hatchery I was in elementary school -- but from what I remember there were rows of tanks and each tank was for salmon at a different stage of the life cycle.
Where is your favorite hiking spot? My family is from Portland and spends a lot of time in Eugene. It's truly a magical area!
Truly! This summer I went to Proxy Falls, just about an hour and a half drive down the McKenzie and it was gorgeous! Magical waterfalls and lots of climbing to do. Where's yours?
