I was absolutely fascinated to learn about temperament and how this differs from mental health problems. Knowing the temperament of a child (or an adult!!) will help give an idea of their natural range and what a more "pathological" or extreme range would look like (a highly adaptable child who then cannot set boundaries with others and gets walked all over). I think learning how temperament largely cannot be changed is humbling for me, both in my life as a clinician and as a person. I also want to know what Tom's first grade report card said. I also was very struck by how prevalent sleep problems are. I wondered: at what point would referring a child to get a sleep study or see a doctor about sleep make sense? If their sleep troubles are clearly linked to anxiety (nightmares, trouble falling asleep due to rumination, for ex.) are these presentations for which we can try therapy before making more referrals? What about night terrors and bedwetting?
