Reaction to Bromfield Chapter 16

I found the case of Michael really interesting because unlike working only with individual adult clients, working with children involves so many more dynamics than just the one between the clinician and the child. It involves the whole family's values and often there are conflicts between a child and parents' values and working with that as a therapist seems very challenging! Typically, the way teachers and others are trained who work with children are taught a pretty small amount about working with families. I had one class on it in my undergraduate teaching program but I don't recall discussing how to manage a conflict like religious/emotional abuse and its impact on children's mental health. One of the things I found frustrating about the education field was that it really didn't value considering any of these deeper issues but now that I'm taking this class and doing these readings, I'm becoming aware of how complex the family dynamics are when you actually embrace working with the whole family system, which in my opinion is necessary in effectively treating children.
