This wasn't my first exposure to the ACE's scores - however, these videos continue to provide important insight for social workers working with children. One of the quotes that stuck with me during Benjamin Perks presentation was "sometimes someone hurts you so bad it stops hurting at all." When you look at the ACE's study it can seem overwhelming and even shocking. I remember sitting at a conference with my mom where they explained the ACE's scores and went over the questions and she laughed and said "wow, even I have some." The ACE's study is so important because as Parks states having a high ACE score can lead to detrimental physiological issues and a shorter life expectancy. Toward the end of his presentation Parks listed recommendations he believes need to be implemented to lower both violence toward children and high ACE scores. It was hard not to feel that his recommendations were euphoric. While I agree with the list of recommendations, he gave he failed to mention the institutional and systemic racism that hinders those recommendations from being fulfilled.
