My name is Mimi. Why am I taking this course? Besides raising my children and using my traditional ways to support them, I haven’t worked with any children previously. This course will give me a better understanding and knowledge when I help youth. The other reason I am taking this course is that it’s convenient for my work schedule.
My last year's field placement was in internal medicine at the Hospital of Univ of Penn, and my next year’s will be in the psychiatric department at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. My particular area of interest is becoming a hospital SW. However, if I get a chance to work with children, I would like to work with youth who struggle with alcohol, substance abuse, and mental health problems.
Since the pandemic, many things have changed, and my child went through this unprecedented situation in high school. I faced many challenges in finding a therapist to address her problem; some didn’t take new clients, and others were overbooked with other clients. After finding one for a long search and addressing the issue, I was thinking about other parents; I was putting my feet in other parents’ shoes who experienced the same issue as I did. Also, my child's school SW helped me address my child’s problem to her teachers, and she successfully graduated from high school. After I saw that this means a social worker helps and benefits our society, I decided to study in the area of children and adolescents to help my communities and society.
