Boyd Webb Chapter 2 - consent, confidentiality, ethics, culture

Looking again at Boyd Webb, Chapter 2, I’m thinking about complications surrounding children’s consent; the confidentiality of their information (confidentiality, when a child requests it, from parents or caregivers); and the ethical code.  I’m thinking that consent, confidentiality and ethics may look and feel different to families and children from cultures other than the current U.S. majority culture.

Boyd Webb introduces the concepts and also writes about cultural humility.  I’ll be interested in seeing more detail in later chapters.

I’m imagining how it might play out if a parent/caregiver demands information about a child in my care.  What if, culturally, for that family, rights and best interests of the child aren’t as important as some other value?  Do I as the worker accept the family’s value system as the system to be implemented in this case — even if that value system may lead to choices and actions that harm the child?
