My takeaway from this reading is that there is a stigma when it comes to mental health problems in African American communities. Many of them try not to discuss their problem with professionals. These could be due to several reasons: they have no peers or family members to trust, or they may not be aware of the impact of mental health problems on the community and their family members. They internalized their feeling so they won’t be stigmatized by the society.
However, the clinician uses a good approach to engage this community. Actively engage communities by providing culturally relevant psychoeducational opportunities regarding depression, involving other African American individual who have experienced depression so they can share their story, and also develop mechanisms to reduce stigma. These strategies will allow the clinician to deliver their message and create awareness in African American society so they can get help to address their mental health problem.
Additionally, I like the way the research team used to protect participants' confidentiality, such as “car’s name.” It is crucial to protect patient confidentiality when conducting research.
