Children in substance-using families

One thing I regret as from the time when I was a teacher is not having a better understanding of neglect in all of its different forms. Our trainings and professional development valuably covered physical and sexual abuse and were beginning to address longterm trauma near the end of my tenure, but the longterm effects of less than adequate nutrition, or more invisibly the longterm effects of inconsistent and dysregulated parenting on children never really came to the fore. I didn't really know anything about attachment styles or early childhood development at the time either, so reading this now makes both a ton of sense and I also realize that its hard to spot in practice, especially in a non-clinical role. I never grew up with direct contact with substance issues in my immediate family, but I can imagine how difficult it must be for a very young child to make sense of how differently a parent acts from moment to moment while trying to adjust behaviors to have their needed attended, and for older children's lives to be governed by that same uncertainty. I'm sure that I taught teens in this exact situation without realizing it, and knowing this then would have helped me understand levels and types of parentification better.
