Dear students,

Welcome back to campus! I'm very excited to be embarking on a new academic year together in CITY 254, History of Modern Architecture. My name is M.C. Overholt, and I will be your professor this semester.

This is a quick note to say that no reading is required for our first session together. If you'd like to get ahead, you'll have two essays assigned for next Thursday, September 3:

  • Dipesh Chakrabarty, Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference (Princeton University Press, 2000). Chapter 4, “Minority Histories, Subaltern Pasts."
  • Esra Akcan, “Postcolonial Theories of Architecture,” in A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture, edited by Elie G. Haddad and David Rifkind (Routledge, 2016).

Both are available under the Readings tab ("Week 1" subfolder).

In case there is any confusion: we will meet in Old Library 224. See you next Tuesday at 10:10 a.m.!

M.C.
