Blog Post # 1: Please respond to the following prompt by 5:00 pm on Friday, September 4

I came to Bryn Mawr initially interested in archaeology, but with little background in the discipline. After jumping around departments I found that what interested me most about my classes was material culture and decided to take Professor Walker's Medieval/Modern course, which was my introduction to the major/discipline and where I decided to declare. The other courses I've taken since have been pretty varied, as have my interests, so I still have a lot of work to do to focus them towards a thesis. Decorative arts have been really appealing to me, especially when looking at Baroque works and in study of Byzantine art I've found the use of space in churches to be fascinating. I don't have particular works I want to explore for my thesis just yet, but I enjoyed writing about the Marquand Medallion carpet at the PMA and would love to look into more textiles in the coming weeks. This semester I'll also be taking Surveying Byzantium and, while I'm not sure that I'll write a Medieval thesis, I'm hoping to use it to build some of the skills I'll need for my thesis and continue pursuing my broader interests in art history.
