Question (Maehler): What was the Sophist intellectual revolution?
Question (general): Did the spread of religion impact traditional writing methods to this extent in other parts of the world?
Comment (Winsbury): I didn't think religious ties were the main reason for the decrease in scroll usage. I, like many, assumed the change to be for technical reasons. I found this paper eye-opening and really interesting, and I regret not looking into the history of written tradition sooner!
Quote (Winsbury): "Just because the codex triumphed how and when it did, it should not be assumed that this triumph was because of the technical shortcomings of papyrus [...] or god-given. [...] The scroll was, in its way and in its time, a sophisticated, professional product with its own high aesthetics and cultural values."
