This visualization (especially in comparison with the "Land" option) is an excellent example of how data visualizations can tell a story. If you were to just look at a regular map of all the counties in the US and what party they voted for you would assume the US was a much more politically homogenous nation than it actually is. When you then compare it with the population map, you can see the phrase "land doesn't vote, people do" in action. Sparsely population counties (that overwhelmingly vote red) are visually weighted more accurately and geographically small population hubs are highlighted.
