Embracing Change

People respond to change in different ways. Some people tend to actively embrace and adapt to change, while others tend to resist change and prefer stability and familiarity. Which type of person are you? What do you want your readers to understand about embracing change or resisting change? Use specific experiences from your own life to develop and support your argument.

I am generally a person who embraces change well. I have realized that embracing change  enables me to grow as a person. Personally, I have found myself to develop the most during periods of great change. For example, moving to Haverford in a new country from Shanghai really forced me to adapt. My ability to live independently and adjust to cultural norms was challenged and by overcoming this issue I got stronger.

Change taught me an ability to adapt. The ability to adapt is in my opinion the most valuable skill because change is the one constant that remains in life. However, I also feel like the absence of change leads to boredom and prevent personal growth. I have found that I feel the most motivated when I am learning something new or facing a new challenge. When I stay in the same routine for too long, I become less interested and feel like I am not making much progress.

I have also seen the effects of resisting change through my uncle. After he retired, his life became very routine, and I noticed that he seemed to become bored without the challenges and responsibilities that came with working. Gradually however, I found that after he filled his life again with challenges, volunteering, learning new skills, and actually working towards something, he became a lot more engaged in his daily life. Seeing this made me realize that we shouldn’t seek comfort and strangly, comfort can become immensely uncomfortable. I learned that having something to challenge yourself with is important, even when you have the choice to live a comfortable life.

Hi David! I was very touched by your writing about adaptation and change. The example of you having to change and adapt to college life was really relatable for me and also made me reflect about how I deal with major changes in life.
