- “Who we are and how we identify ourselves is never a practice that is achieved alone.”
This passage really stuck out to me because my identity is influenced by those I surround myself with. Throughout my life, I have made various connections with my peers and I continue to learn and grow with them. I found this quote interesting because I usually percieve identity as something that is deeply personal. However, this line made me more aware of how much of our true selves stems from the environment around us.
- Relationality, according to Beate Rössler, can be both “an enabling condition and…an obstacle to autonomy.”
I liked this idea because it brings awareness to the fact that relationships can have two separate effects on one’s independence. Furhter, those we surround ourselves with can support our decisions and be there for us. However, they can also influence us in ways that can make it harder to figure out our true desires.
- Individualistic traditions, in the first place, insufficiently recognize the role and value of qualities traditionally coded as ‘feminine’ for individual agency
This quote really caught my attention because I do not think that caring for other people automically means you have no independence. Someone can take the needs of their family or friends into account while still being able to make their own decisions.
