Hi everyone! My name is Callia, I use she/her pronouns, and I am a first year at Haverford! I’m from San Anselmo, California, a town in Marin County just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. I’m interested in being a Cities major, and I’m really excited to learn about the culture and make up of cities in this course, and examine different spaces and their existence. Especially since I have no previous experiences studying urban spaces or related topics, I am looking forward to officially studying a topic I find fascinating. In addition to Cities, I am academically interested in history and, even more generally, the humanities.

In my free time I do art (I’ve danced for many, many years and I choreograph too, and I have lots of visual art projects in progress), embroider occasionally, and I love to listen to music whenever I can. I am always ready to solve a crossword, too. Sustainability, in particular sustainable and ethical clothing, is important and intriguing to me, and I am always looking for new swaps to make or new ways to conserve and consume sustainably and renewably.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Zoom and in the classroom!

Hi Callia! That's so cool that we both dance. What is your favorite style to choreograph in?

Modern! Definitely modern :) I really like modern for the expressive freedom found in rigidity and atypical, "ugly" movement, especially as compared to ballet which I initially trained in and find to be too concerned (with exceptions, of course, like neoclassical movement) with being pretty or palatable.

Great to see someone else from the bay area as well - I'm from Mountain View (Santa Clara County). On a different note, hope the fires aren't affecting your area too badly!

Hi! I love a good crossword puzzle too, but I've kind of stopped recently in quarantine - you've reminded/inspired me to start back up again!!

Also, I like the physical geography, sense of place, and how nature has become so integrated in my home town and county. This has come at great cost, however, and contributed to something I really do not like about my home community: economic and racial segregation masquerading as conservation.

Hi Callia,

Do you think the area in which you grew up helped to cultivate your interest in the arts?
