Cultural Appropriation
A reminder that you can choose to respond in writing (between 125–175 words) or via a recorded audio/visual clip of you talking (2–3 minutes).
What are some of the underlying cultural attitudes and ideologies that shaped white early modern dancers’ (namely, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and Lester Horton) fascination with and appropriation of “other” cultures’ dancing? How was the "modern dance" approach different from what La Meri, an American "ethnic dancer" was doing? Why might she not typically be included in modern dance history?
Please include at least one quote from Wozny (2020), Srinivasan (2012), and/or Shea Murphy (2007) that supports your opinion. (If it is their use of a primary source material please mention that in your citation.)
