Hi everyone, I’m Emmeline Riendeau, a first year student at Haverford. I use she, her, and hers pronouns. I’m from Barre, a rural town in central Massachusetts. I’m very interested in architecture, and I thought this class would be a great way to learn about the physical aspects of cities and also how those structures affect and are shaped by people. I hope to offer a unique perspective to the class coming from such a rural town, and I hope you all share your experiences with me.

Outside of the classroom I like to spend time hiking and running. I’m very excited to be part of the Haverford women’s track team this year. I’m also very passionate about environmentalism. I’m always trying to get my friends to recycle more, drive less, and start composting. Lastly, I really enjoy reading. My favorite books from quarantine are Conversations with Friends and Normal People, both by Sally Rooney.

Hi Emmeline! I love that you're encouraging your friends to be more environmentally friendly. My city (Albany, CA) used to give out little compost bins for households, as well as giving options to get a smaller trash can if you don't produce very much trash, and my city now has a very high rate of recycling and composting. Does the area where you're from do anything similar?

That's awesome. Unfortunately my town does not have any programs to encourage recycling or composting. However, being a rural area, many people do compost because it is very easy to do so in your own back yard.

Hi Emmeline! As someone also coming from a rural area (albeit in NY), it's so difficult to convince others to be more environmentally friendly, but I'm so glad you're doing it! Where I live, it's nearly impossible to get anywhere without a car because its so rural. Plus, we have to pay for a private company to recycle! I can only hope that my town finds a way to incentivize more environmentally-friendly policies in the future.

Hi Emmeline! I am so happy to know someone also interested in Architecture take this course. I have tried to get closer to the Archi world since my first year, and I keep exploring whether my ability and talent could make me be an Archi person. I would like to recommend you the Archi Studio course (City 226&228) at Bryn Mawr and the Sculpture class at Haverford.
p.s. Love your recycling action! My community started to push for a new recycling rule this Spring, and it classifies garbage more detailedly. It's great to see that everyone is trying to reduce the waste and recycle the resources.
