Hi everyone,

My name is Alex Millones (he/him) and I am a first year at Haverford. I am from Portland, Maine which is a nice little city on the coast. Right now I am undecided when it comes to majors. I am for the most part interested in languages and the humanities. I decided to take this class because I wanted to learn about how my hometown functions from an academic perspective. Portland, ME, also has a lot of homelessness which is an issue I am curious about and want to know what I can do to help. I am passionate about voter rights which is why I am volunteering for "Reclaim Our Vote" which helps people register in areas of the country that are more rural or the process is confusing or voters are being suppressed. Some of my hobbies include playing for the mens soccer team at Haverford and playing the drums/percussion. Here's a picture of me from when I first visited the Philly area last year.

Hi Alex! Last summer, I went to Portland and Lewiston to visit some colleges. I do agree with you! The area and weather is so nice near the coast.

Hey Alex, I think it will also be interesting learning about how to face the problem of homelessness in cities. I am also from Maine, and I remember this summer in Portland there were rumors going around about Preble Street having to close. I know that some officials tried to get them to stop distributing food to those in need because they were worried about the spread of covid in the homelessness community. Seems like there should be more work towards providing housing and jobs for those in need rather than what the officials are doing by trying to clean up the aftermath that comes with having a homeless community.
