Hello everyone! My name is Lily Goltz (she/her) and I am a sophomore at Bryn Mawr. I am from Damariscotta, Maine, a tiny town of just 2,000 people on the coast. I am an intended physics and cities double major, probably minoring in math. I hope to go to engineering school after Bryn Mawr, so combining physics and the architectural side of cities is my way of substituting an engineering undergrad. Outside of academics, I am on the crew team and I work for one of the physics professors in his lab.

I love being from Maine, specifically being from such a small community. I believe it has impacted me a lot, being raised in such a rural area, and it has become a big part of my identity. If it were not for my mother's ultimatum to my father, forcing him to stay in Maine if he wanted to marry her, I would have been raised in a city in New Jersey or Wisconsin, where my mom and dad are from respectively. Growing up it was definitely hard, going to school with the same 50 kids from Kindergarten to 12th grade, but I would not trade the atmosphere and community of our tiny town for anything. Additionally, I love the outdoors; backpacking, kayaking, sailing, and skiing, so being only two hours from Acadia National Park, and just a few hours from Katahdin, I consider them to be basically my back yard.

Hey Lily, how do you think your background from a rural area has impacted your appreciation for cities and your interest in architecture and engineering?

Hey Kayla, I think my appreciation for cities and architecture did not stem from growing up in a rural area, but rather going to bigger places like Portland, Maine, Boston, MA, and NYC. Going from such a small town to seeing high rises and real downtowns with streets with sidewalks was intriguing.
