Hi everybody! I'm Kelly Peterson, I'm a sophomore on campus this year, and I hope to study a double major in Cities and Fine Arts. I like to draw and create pet portraits in my free time, and I'm a member of the Bryn Mawr Swim team. I'm from Kansas City, on the Kansas side of the metro area. I love that Kansas City is a rapidly growing city. It's fun to see the city the city develop and its culture grow. I love that KC has a strong culture of love for its local artists and businesses. I also like how urban and rural culture blends together, as the city is surrounded by farmland/prairies that is quickly being converted into suburbs.
However, something I dislike is the lack of diversity within the affluent suburbs where I live. It leads to a lot of social problems being ignored because people live in a bubble. this is such a prominent aspect of my county that people call it "The Bubble." One thing I've noticed, as a consequence of affluent white areas, are that people in this area adopt an aversion to discomfort and confrontation. It's really sad to see people shy away from progress for the sake of preserving themselves from confrontation further down the line.
