BRYN MAWR COLLEGE DANCE PROGRAM

STUDENT COURSE GUIDE

GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION and REQUIREMENTS:

REGISTRATION/SCHEDULE/GRADES:

  • Beginning Level Courses: These dance courses are taken for Credit or No Credit and not a letter/numerical grade. Most courses that are beginning level are labeled. Tap and Hip Hop Lineages are beginning level and are not currently labeled this way in bionic.
  • All dance classes begin on the first week of classes, including those that are taken for PE credit.
  • Ensemble courses end after the performances. There are no additional required classes post performances.

ATTENDANCE (for both academic and PE credit):

Below are the attendance requirements for dance courses. In general, regular attendance is essential and expected for understanding the course content and for making progress towards optimal learning for the individual and the collective. Students are responsible for communication and follow up with faculty regarding absences.

Each faculty member should let you know which category is appropriate for their course.

  • Artistic + Embodied + Writing Attentive Dance Courses: Students are provided 2 absences for courses that meet once a week and 3 absences for courses that meet twice a week without influence upon their grade. (Approaches to Dance, Dance Composition, Sacred Activism, Practical Anatomy, and Screendance are examples of these courses.)

  • Ensembles: Students are provided 2 absences for courses that meet once a week and 3 absences for courses that meet twice a week without influence upon their grade.

  • Technique Courses: Students are provided 2 absences for courses that meet once a week and 4 absences for courses that meet twice a week without influence upon their grade.

Illness or Injury: The provided absences in general include illness unless there is an extensive period of illness or injury. This should be discussed, and a plan should be developed in dialogue with the appropriate faculty. Faculty may also consult the Director of Dance and the dean’s office when needed.

  • If experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, stay home and contact appropriate faculty. Your absence will not count toward the attendance requirement above. Covid related absences are excused. You will be given an alternative assignment as determined with faculty.

Religious holiday observance is an excused absence. How to make up the embodied and content elements of missing class needs to be discussed with the faculty and an agreed upon strategy needs to be developed and approved by the appropriate faculty.

TECHNIQUE COURSES WRITING REQUIREMENT:

(This is for students taking courses for academic credit only.)

All technique courses taken for academic credit include written reflection journals and sometimes a small set of other resources for review. Please refer to your faculty member for instructions on their specific requirements.

ENSEMBLES:

Ensemble students across the academic year must be prepared to fully participate in creative rehearsals (class), technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances. Fall ensemble students will have additional rehearsals in the spring semester. All ensemble students perform in the spring concert which is generally scheduled during mid to late April. Fall students commit for a full academic year with the primary work of building the choreographic piece in the fall. Spring students commit for the spring semester.
