Dealing with Changes in College

People deal with big life changes very differently. Some people try to ignore change, some people try to face it, and some people might make different decisions. While change is something we humans always struggle with, it is inevitable in life. Therefore, people should embrace change positively. When faced with changes, whether big or small, one should try to adapt positively. This was a necessary way to overcome or cope with change during my first year in college.

My first year in college was slightly rough, especially because I attend a liberal arts school. Most of the culture revolves around American culture, which was a cultural shock for me. People were using pronouns, party culture, and even individuality/living alone. These are only some of the cultures that really shocked me coming from a Korean international school. In Korea, I would have a set friend group I would hang out with, activities or clubs that I would take part in, and also a set time I had to be in school. However, in college, the biggest change I had was having something set up for me. In college, you live alone and have the whole day to yourself. You also only take 4 very rigorous classes. Therefore, managing my time between social life and education was a big change for me.

At first, I did not try to accept change. My sleep schedule was weird, and I tended to do work at the last minute. I also mostly stayed in my dorm all day. I did not like this change. I wanted to see my high school friends again and wanted to go back home. I was resisting this change. However, as time passed, I started to approach this change positively. Rather than thinking about the past, I thought about the future. I imagined the cool people I would meet in different events and the high level of education I could be getting in class. Therefore, I started attending events to meet new people, and started going outside more, living in a more organized manner rather than a poor lifestyle.

In conclusion, when faced with change, people should approach it with a positive mindset rather than remain in an unchanged position and be stubborn. Positivity brings greatness to the world.

Hey Woo Min, I really sympathize with what you're saying. If im interpreting it right, you're not used to the sudden change in schools rules and how different the culture was. This caused it to be hard on you in adjusting and this also happened to me but just not much about the culture but more about how im more independent and everything is now on me. However, I love the mindset of tackling the change with a positive attitude.

I can relate a lot to your experience and transition to college. Despite being American and attending schools in the US, I was raised by my Nigerian parents, and the culture is part of who I am. I too had to get used to party culture and the use of pronouns, and especially individuality.
