Hi Everyone, 

My name is Laura Beard, I use the pronouns she/her and I am an incoming part-time student in the GSSWSR program. I am a career changer and will be working full time as a graphic designer for an arts/education institution in Philadelphia while attending Bryn Mawr.

I am drawn to the field of social work for many reasons, one factor being the support various social service professionals have had in helping my family advocate for my son with ADHD in an educational as well as clinical setting. 

I am interested in macro as well as clinical social work, and in working with families and children as well as women and possibly the intersection of art and therapy how it can help individuals work through trauma. I’m hoping my first year in the GSSWSR will help guide me toward a more specific direction.

Welcome Laura and thank you for sharing your introduction. You'll certainly have time to explore and shape your social work interests while at the GSSWSR. People come to social work for a variety of reasons, but, in my experience, there's often a very personal connection to the work.
