Finishing from Class, and Lavater (p. 1-18, 31-50, due 8. September)
As always, feel welcome to write a few sentences to get your initial ideas/impressions down for each question. They will be a basis for further discussion in class.
1) Please review the distinctions and coordinates between modern/traditional surveillance and postmodern surveillance (in the slideshow from class on 9/3), there are 9 of them in total. Think about a practice in you life or a work of art, literature etc that features the broad definition of surveillance (Lyon: "looking beyond idle curiosity" or for distinct purposes). How do you see one or more of these coordinates playing out in your work of choice? And what is one set of coordinates you would like to discuss further?
2) In pages of the book assigned, Lavater discusses what physiognomy is, the advantages and disadvantages of physiognomy, and physiognomic sensation. Which advantage or disadvantage strikes you the most? Please also incorporate a quote.
3) Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy is a large and comprehensive volume on different applications of physiognomy. Take a look at the table of contents and at the different plates (images) contained in various parts of the book (other than where we have read excerpts). Pick an image (include page number) - in what section does it occur and what is depicted in the image? Feel welcome to comment on image composition and on the relationship between text and image in the book.
4) Any additional comments or questions you have!
